The Teso region in Eastern Uganda

Amuria Development Association (AMDA) works to empower local communities to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable environmental practices through grassroots action. In partnership with the UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme, managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), AMDA implements community-led solutions to address deforestation and the loss of indigenous plant species in Kapelebyong District, Uganda.

Through this collaboration, AMDA supports over 1,100 community members and 250 households, working with women-led farmer groups to protect native species, establish seed banks and nurseries, restore 50 acres of demonstration forests, and raise awareness on biodiversity conservation. Our work strengthens local capacity, empowers women, and supports local governments to develop and enforce biodiversity-friendly policies, ensuring lasting environmental and community impact.

Project Strategy

The overall goal is to significantly enhance environmental sustainability and economic development in Eastern Uganda by 2028. The plan aims to increase forest cover by at least 23%, improve community-based forest management, and create sustainable livelihoods for over 1 million residents, with a focus on vulnerable groups such as People Living with HIV/AIDS, People with Disabilities, women, youth, and children.
